Neminath and the Caged Animals

Prince Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara, was a cousin of Lord Krishna. He was betrothed to the beautiful Princess Rajul (Rajimati). The wedding was to be a grand royal affair, and Neminath traveled to Rajul's palace in a magnificent chariot procession.

As the chariot neared the wedding venue, Neminath heard a chorus of terrified, pitiful cries. He asked his charioteer, "Where is this heartbreaking sound coming from?"

The charioteer pointed to a massive enclosure filled with hundreds of sheep, goats, deer, and birds. "My Lord," he replied, "these animals have been captured and penned here. Tomorrow, they will be slaughtered to provide meat for the royal guests attending your wedding feast."

A deep wave of horror and immense compassion swept over Neminath. He thought, "If my happiness and my wedding require the slaughter of hundreds of innocent lives, then this happiness is a curse. I will not build my joy on the graves of others."

He immediately ordered the charioteer to release all the animals. Watching the animals run free into the forest, Neminath felt a profound sense of detachment from the world (Vairagya).

He turned his chariot around, canceled the wedding, left his royal life behind, and climbed Mount Girnar to become an ascetic. Princess Rajul, understanding his noble heart, did not marry anyone else and instead became a Jain nun herself, following his path to liberation.
