The demon king Hiranyakashipu performed severe austerities and obtained boons that made him nearly immortal. Arrogant and power-hungry, he conquered the three worlds and banned the worship of Lord Vishnu, declaring himself the supreme god.
But ironically, his own son, the young prince Prahlada, was a born devotee of Vishnu. He spent his time chanting the Lord's names and teaching his schoolmates about devotion. When Hiranyakashipu learned of this, he was furious.
The king tried to persuade his son, but Prahlada calmly replied that Narayana was the supreme Lord of all. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu ordered Prahlada to be killed. The boy was thrown off cliffs, trampled by elephants, bitten by venomous snakes, and thrown into fire (with Holika), but every time, Lord Vishnu protected him.
Driven to madness, Hiranyakashipu pointed to a stone pillar in the palace and roared, "Is your God in this pillar? If so, let Him save you now!" He then struck the pillar with his mace.
The pillar shattered, and from it emerged a terrifying and magnificent form—Lord Narasimha, half-man and half-lion. Roaring loudly, Narasimha dragged the demon king to the threshold at twilight and killed him with His claws, bypassing all the conditions of Hiranyakashipu's boons.
While everyone was terrified of the fierce Narasimha, young Prahlada approached Him without fear and offered prayers. The Lord's anger melted, and He blessed Prahlada. True faith protects the devotee in the darkest of times.
