Hero Legend
Prince Devavrata, the son of King Shantanu and Goddess Ganga, was the rightful heir to the throne of Hastinapura. He was brilliant, powerful, and deeply devoted to his father.
One day, King Shantanu fell in love with a beautiful fisherwoman named Satyavati. He asked her father for her hand in marriage. The fisherman agreed, but on one condition: the son born to Satyavati must become the next king, not Devavrata. Shantanu, unwilling to disinherit his noble son, returned to the palace heartbroken and fell into deep depression.
Noticing his father's sorrow, Devavrata investigated and learned of the fisherman's condition. He immediately went to the fisherman and declared, "I renounce my claim to the throne of Hastinapura. Let the son of Satyavati be king."
The fisherman was pleased but raised another doubt: "You are noble, but what if your future children dispute the throne with Satyavati's children?"
Without a moment's hesitation, Devavrata raised his hand and took a terrifying, earth-shattering vow: "I swear that I shall never marry. I take the vow of lifelong, absolute celibacy (Brahmacharya). I will serve whoever sits on the throne of Hastinapura as long as I live."
The gods in heaven were so moved by this unimaginable sacrifice of a young prince that they showered flowers upon him and declared, "He is Bhishma!" (The one who took a terrible vow). Shantanu, moved to tears, granted Bhishma the boon of Iccha Mrityu—the power to choose the time of his own death.
