Hero Legend
Ekalavya was a young prince of the Nishada (hunter/tribal) community. He passionately wanted to learn archery from Dronacharya, the greatest military teacher of the Kuru princes. However, Drona refused to teach him because Ekalavya was not a Kshatriya.
Undeterred, Ekalavya went into the forest, gathered mud, and sculpted a beautiful statue of Dronacharya. Treating the statue as his living guru, he practiced archery day and night with immense focus and devotion.
Years later, the Kuru princes were hunting in the forest. Their dog wandered away and began barking at a stranger. Suddenly, seven arrows hit the dog's mouth simultaneously, shutting it without shedding a single drop of blood. It was a feat of impossible skill.
Arjuna was shocked and brought the dog to Drona. They soon found Ekalavya, who humbly introduced himself as a student of Dronacharya. Drona realized that Ekalavya was a far greater archer than Arjuna, breaking his promise to make Arjuna the greatest.
To preserve his promise, Drona said, "If you are my student, you must give me my Guru Dakshina (teacher's fee). I want your right thumb." Without a moment's hesitation or a trace of anger, Ekalavya drew his knife, sliced off his right thumb, and placed it at Drona's feet.
Though he could no longer shoot with the same legendary skill, Ekalavya's name became immortalized as the ultimate symbol of unwavering devotion and surrender to a Guru.
