In a lush forest near the Trikuta mountains lived Gajendra, the majestic king of elephants. One day, he led his herd to a beautiful lake to bathe and drink. As he stepped into the water, a powerful crocodile clamped its jaws onto his leg.
A terrifying struggle began. Gajendra fought with all his immense strength, trying to drag the crocodile ashore, while the crocodile tried to pull him deeper into the water. The battle raged for a thousand years. Gajendra's family and friends tried to help, but seeing the crocodile's strength, they eventually abandoned him.
As Gajendra's strength faded, he realized a profound truth: his physical power, his status as king, and his family could not save him from death. Only the Supreme Lord could rescue him.
With total surrender, Gajendra plucked a lotus flower with his trunk, raised it toward the heavens, and offered a beautiful prayer of surrender, calling out to the ultimate protector, Lord Narayana.
Hearing the pure cry of Sharanagati (complete surrender), Lord Vishnu immediately appeared on His eagle mount, Garuda. Throwing His Sudarshana Chakra, the Lord severed the crocodile's head, freeing Gajendra.
The crocodile, who was a cursed Gandharva, was liberated, and Gajendra, who was a cursed king in his past life, was granted a divine form and taken to Vaikuntha. The story teaches that when the ego falls and one surrenders completely, God's grace is instantaneous.
