Katha
Prince Dhruva was only five years old when his stepmother, Queen Suruchi, cruelly pulled him off his father's lap. 'Only the son born from my womb has the right to sit on the king's lap,' she mocked. His father, King Uttanapada, remained silent.
Heartbroken, Dhruva ran to his own mother, Suniti, who wiped his tears and said, 'If you desire the highest seat, seek the lap of Lord Narayana. Only He can grant a position no one can take away.'
Determined, the five-year-old boy left the palace and entered the dense Madhuvan forest. Sage Narada tried to dissuade him, citing the terrors of the jungle, but seeing the boy's unshakable resolve, gave him the mantra: 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.'
Dhruva began his penance. In the first month, he ate only fruits every three days. By the fourth month, he lived only on air. By the fifth month, he stood on one leg, his concentration on Lord Narayana so absolute that he ceased breathing entirely. His single-pointed focus (Ekagrata) was so powerful that it drew the subtle breath from the entire universe, causing the cosmos to choke.
Alarmed, the Devas rushed to Lord Vishnu, who immediately manifested before the boy. Seeing the Lord, Dhruva forgot all his worldly desires and pain. He no longer wanted his father's throne; he only wanted to serve the Divine. The Lord blessed him to become the Pole Star (Dhruva Loka), the most unshakable point in the heavens, around which the entire galaxy revolves.
