Sudama and Krishna had been inseparable friends at Sage Sandipani's ashram. Years later, while Krishna ruled as the Lord of Dwarka in unimaginable splendour, Sudama lived as an impoverished brahmin, struggling to feed his family.
At his wife's gentle urging, Sudama finally agreed to visit Krishna, hoping for some help. He had nothing to offer his royal friend except a small pouch of dry, flattened rice (poha) tied in his ragged shawl.
When Sudama arrived at the magnificent palace of Dwarka, the guards hesitated, but Krishna came running barefoot to the gates. The Lord of the Universe embraced the frail, ragged Sudama with tears in His eyes. Krishna seated Sudama on his own bed and personally washed his tired feet.
Overwhelmed by Krishna's love and the grandeur of the palace, Sudama felt deeply ashamed of his humble gift and tried to hide the small pouch of rice. But Krishna snatched it away playfully. 'What have you brought for me, my friend? This flattened rice is more precious to me than all the wealth of the three worlds!'
Krishna eagerly ate a handful. With that one handful, He covertly transformed Sudama's dilapidated hut into a palace of gold. Sudama returned home without ever having asked for anything, realizing that true devotion needs no words, and pure love removes all poverty of the soul.
