Hero Legend
Jatayu was an ancient and noble vulture, a close friend of King Dasharatha, Lord Rama's father. While Rama and Lakshmana were away chasing the golden deer, the demon king Ravana abducted Sita and carried her through the sky in his flying chariot (Pushpaka Vimana).
Hearing Sita's desperate cries for help, the elderly Jatayu awoke. He saw the terrifying ten-headed Ravana. Jatayu was incredibly old and weak, while Ravana was at the peak of his invincible power. Reason would have suggested staying out of the fight.
But Jatayu was bound by Dharma and loyalty. He intercepted the chariot and warned Ravana to let Sita go. When Ravana mocked him, the old bird attacked with terrifying ferocity. He tore apart Ravana's chariot, killed the horses, and badly wounded the demon king with his beak and talons.
The battle in the sky was epic. Ravana, recovering from the shock, drew his divine sword, Chandrahas, and ruthlessly cut off Jatayu's wings and talons. The noble bird plummeted to the earth, mortally wounded.
Later, Rama and Lakshmana found Jatayu bleeding on the ground. Holding onto his last breath through sheer willpower, Jatayu informed Rama of Sita's abduction and the direction Ravana had taken. Only after passing on this vital information did he die in Rama's lap.
Moved to tears by the bird's supreme sacrifice, Lord Rama performed Jatayu's last rites with his own hands, granting the noble vulture Moksha (liberation) and honoring him as a father.
