Katha
Kumbhakarna was the gigantic and immensely powerful brother of Ravana. Unlike Ravana, Kumbhakarna was not inherently evil, but he was heavily afflicted by Tamas—the quality of ignorance, lethargy, and darkness.
Due to a slip of the tongue while asking for a boon from Brahma (asking for Nidrasana instead of Indrasana), he was cursed to sleep for six continuous months, waking for only one day to eat voraciously before falling asleep again.
During the great war in Lanka, Ravana's forces were being decimated by Rama's army. In desperation, Ravana ordered his men to awaken Kumbhakarna. Elephants were walked over him, drums were beaten, and mountains of food were prepared. Finally, the giant awoke.
When Ravana explained the situation, Kumbhakarna rebuked him: "You have kidnapped the Mother of the Universe, Sita! Rama is none other than Narayana. You have invited your own doom." He possessed the knowledge of dharma, but his attachment and blind loyalty to his brother overpowered his wisdom.
Despite knowing the truth, Kumbhakarna marched into battle against Lord Rama. He caused massive destruction in the monkey army before finally being slain by Rama's arrows. As he died, the sight of the Lord granted him liberation.
Kumbhakarna symbolizes a soul that has knowledge but is paralyzed by spiritual sleep (Tamas) and worldly attachments. Knowing the truth is not enough; one must act on it.
