Mallinath — The Illusion of Beauty

Malli was the princess of Mithila and the 19th Tirthankara (according to the Shvetambara Jain tradition, the only female Tirthankara). Her physical beauty was so legendary that kings from six different empires simultaneously sent marriage proposals.

When her father, King Kumbha, politely refused them, all six kings felt insulted. They formed an alliance and marched their massive armies to attack Mithila. The city was surrounded, and war was imminent.

Princess Malli, who was highly spiritually evolved, decided to stop the bloodshed by teaching the kings a profound lesson. She secretly commissioned a life-sized, hollow golden statue of herself that looked exactly like her.

Every day, she dumped her leftover food into the hollow head of the statue and closed the lid. After several days, the food inside rotted and created a foul, unbearable stench.

Malli invited the six kings into a special chamber to view the statue. The kings were mesmerized by its flawless beauty, thinking it was the princess herself. Then, Malli entered and opened the lid on the statue's head.

An overwhelmingly disgusting stench filled the room, and the kings covered their noses in revulsion. Malli said, 'O Kings! You are fighting for this body. But the human body, just like this statue, is merely a beautiful outer covering filled with blood, bones, and filth. Why go to war for this temporary illusion?' Hearing this, the kings experienced deep detachment, abandoned the war, and became monks.
