The Story of Punyapal

Punyapal was a young man whose Punya (merit from good deeds in past lives) was incredibly strong. However, his stepbrothers were extremely jealous of him and constantly plotted to kill him to take his share of the inheritance.

The brothers took Punyapal to a deep, abandoned well in the forest and pushed him in. But because of his Punya, he fell exactly onto a soft ledge halfway down. In the wall of the well, he found a hidden entrance leading to an underground chamber filled with forgotten royal treasure.

Days later, he found his way out and returned home, much richer than before. The brothers were shocked but tried again. They sent him to a neighboring kingdom with a sealed letter to the king, secretly asking the king to execute the bearer immediately.

While resting near a temple before entering the city, the king's beautiful daughter saw Punyapal sleeping and fell in love with him. She read the letter sticking out of his pocket. Horrified, she quickly rewrote the letter to say: 'Please marry your daughter to the bearer of this letter immediately,' and slipped it back.

The king read the letter, was highly impressed by Punyapal's glowing demeanor, and married him to the princess. Punyapal became a powerful prince overnight.

When his wicked brothers heard this, they realized they could not fight his destiny. Punyapal forgave them completely, realizing that everything that happens is just the play of Karma. He used his vast wealth for charity and eventually followed the spiritual path.
