In the Treta Yuga, the ten-headed demon Ravana had performed intense tapas and received boons of near-invincibility from Lord Brahma. He terrorised the three worlds, attacked the gods, disrupted sacred yajnas, and reduced the Rishis to despair. Even Indra, the king of gods, was defeated.
The Earth, Bhumi Devi, could bear her suffering no more. She took the form of a cow and, accompanied by sages and gods, approached Lord Brahma. With tears flowing, she described the atrocities being committed by Ravana and his demons.
Lord Brahma led the entire assembly of gods to the divine ocean of milk — Kshira Sagara — where Lord Vishnu rested on the great serpent Ananta. They prayed with great devotion: "O Lord, the earth is crushed under Ravana's tyranny. Only You can restore dharma."
Lord Vishnu opened His lotus eyes and said: "I hear your prayer. I shall be born as the son of King Dasharatha in the beautiful city of Ayodhya, in the noble Ikshvaku lineage. I shall take birth as four sons through the Putrakameshti Yajna that the sage Rishyashringa will perform."
In Ayodhya, King Dasharatha — who had long grieved his childlessness — performed the Putrakameshti Yajna under the sage's guidance. From the sacred fire emerged a divine being carrying a golden vessel of kheer. The three queens consumed the prasad.
On the Navami tithi of Chaitra Shukla Paksha — Ram Navami — as the Pushya Nakshatra rose and five planets aligned in their most auspicious positions, Queen Kaushalya gave birth to a son of incomparable radiance. The child smiled with four arms holding conch, chakra, lotus, and mace — then transformed into a beautiful infant boy. The entire kingdom of Ayodhya erupted in celebration. The Lord had come.
