Hero Legend
Cursed by Sage Durvasa, the Devas (gods) lost their strength and glory. Lord Vishnu advised them to churn the cosmic Ocean of Milk (Kshira Sagara) to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Because the task was monumental, they formed an uneasy alliance with their enemies, the Asuras (demons).
Using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the giant serpent Vasuki as the rope, they began the Samudra Manthan. Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma (a giant tortoise) to support the sinking mountain on his back.
As the churning intensified, the ocean first produced Halahala, a lethal, devastating poison. The fumes of the poison were so toxic that they began to choke the Devas, the Asuras, and all of creation. Panic spread, as neither gods nor demons could handle its deadly power.
Desperate, they rushed to Lord Shiva for protection. Filled with supreme compassion for the universe, Shiva scooped the burning Halahala into his hands and drank it.
Alarmed, his consort Goddess Parvati pressed his neck tightly to prevent the poison from descending into his stomach (where the universe resides) or rising to his head. The potent poison remained locked in his throat, turning it a brilliant blue.
Because of this supreme sacrifice, Shiva is worshipped as Neelakantha (The Blue-Throated One). Afterward, the churning continued, producing divine treasures like the goddess Lakshmi, the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu, and finally, the Amrita.
