King Sanatkumar's Pride

Sanatkumar was a Chakravartin (universal monarch) known across the realms for his unparalleled, flawless physical beauty. In the heavenly assembly, even the gods praised his handsome appearance.

Two Devatas (gods) decided to see this for themselves. They disguised themselves as humans and arrived at Sanatkumar's palace. They found him in his private gym, covered in dust and sweat from a workout. Even in this state, they were mesmerized by his glowing beauty.

Noticing them, Sanatkumar felt a surge of massive pride and ego. He said, 'If you think I look good now in sweat and dust, wait in the royal court. Let me take a bath, put on my divine garments and jewels, and then you will see my true majestic beauty!'

The gods waited in the court. Sanatkumar bathed, dressed in his finest silks, wore his crown, and entered the court with great pomp. But when the two gods looked at him this time, they shook their heads in disappointment.

Sanatkumar asked why they were displeased. The gods replied, 'O King, the beauty we saw in the gym is gone. In the short time you took to dress, your body has changed. Your glow has faded, and the signs of decay have set in.'

Sanatkumar looked at himself and realized he had developed a severe skin disease. His youth and beauty were vanishing rapidly. Realizing the extreme fragility and impermanence of the physical body, his ego shattered. He renounced his empire that very day and became a Jain monk to seek eternal, inner beauty.
