Shabari was a simple tribal woman who lived in the ashram of Sage Matanga. Before the sage passed away, he told her to stay in the ashram and wait, for one day, Lord Rama Himself would visit her to grant her liberation.
Believing her Guru's words implicitly, Shabari spent decades waiting. Every single day, she swept the paths of the ashram, gathered fresh flowers, and plucked the sweetest wild berries from the forest, preparing for the arrival of her Lord. Her youth faded, and she grew old and frail, but her daily routine of devotion never faltered.
Finally, during His search for Sita, Lord Rama and Lakshmana arrived at her ashram. Shabari was overwhelmed with ecstatic joy. She washed their feet and offered them a seat.
She then brought the berries she had collected. In her immense love and innocent anxiety to ensure the Lord only ate sweet fruits, she took a bite of each berry. If it was sweet, she put it in Rama's bowl; if it was sour, she threw it away.
Lakshmana was shocked to see her offering half-bitten (jutha) food and tried to stop her, but Rama smiled. He saw not the physical contamination, but the absolute purity of her heart. Rama ate the berries with great relish, declaring them the sweetest food He had ever eaten.
Through her simple, untainted devotion, Shabari attained liberation right there in the presence of the Lord. Her story remains the ultimate symbol of Bhakti, where love supersedes all rituals.
