Hero Legend
King Shibi of the Chola dynasty was renowned across the three worlds for his truthfulness, charity, and absolute commitment to Dharma. He had taken a vow to protect anyone who sought his shelter.
To test his greatness, Lord Indra and Lord Agni hatched a plan. Agni took the form of a terrified dove, and Indra took the form of a fierce hawk. The dove flew into King Shibi's court and hid trembling in the King's lap.
The hawk followed and demanded, "O King, that dove is my natural prey. By protecting it, you are starving me and going against the laws of nature." King Shibi replied, "This bird has sought my protection. I cannot abandon it. I will give you anything else you desire—grain, wealth, or my kingdom."
The hawk cunningly said, "I only eat meat. Give me flesh from your own body, exactly equal to the weight of the dove." Shibi immediately agreed. A balance scale was brought. The dove sat on one side, and Shibi began slicing flesh from his own leg to place on the other.
But the dove became miraculously heavy. Shibi cut more and more flesh, but the scale would not budge. Finally, bleeding and near death, the King stepped onto the scale himself, offering his entire life to save the small bird.
At that moment, the hawk and dove vanished, and Indra and Agni appeared in their divine forms. They healed his wounds instantly, blessing him with eternal glory. True compassion means valuing the lives of others as much as your own.
