The Patience of Guru Angad

In Khadur Sahib, a Hindu ascetic named Shiv Nath had enjoyed immense respect until Guru Angad Dev Ji moved to the village. As people flocked to hear the Guru's message of equality and love, Shiv Nath's influence and income dwindled.

A severe drought hit the region. Shiv Nath saw his opportunity. He told the desperate villagers, 'The rain gods are angry because you follow this man Angad instead of the ancient ways. If you kick him out of the village, I will bring the rain.'

Driven by desperation, the villagers approached Guru Angad and asked him to leave. The Guru's followers were furious and ready to fight to defend him. But Guru Angad remained completely serene.

'If my leaving brings rain to these poor farmers,' the Guru said, 'then I will gladly leave.' Without a word of anger, he packed his few belongings and walked into the forest, camping miles away.

Days passed. Shiv Nath performed his rituals, but not a single drop of rain fell. The villagers realized they had been manipulated and had insulted a true saint. Filled with remorse, they ran to the forest, falling at the Guru's feet, begging him to return.

When asked why he didn't use his spiritual power to bring rain or punish the ascetic, Guru Angad replied, 'Patience is the highest asceticism. The earth yields its fruits only after enduring the plow; the saint yields his grace only after enduring the ignorance of the world.'
