Dhamma Story
Vimalakirti was not a monk; he was a wealthy, successful businessman who lived in the bustling city of Vaisali. Yet, his understanding of the Dhamma was so incredibly profound that even the Buddha's greatest monastic disciples—like Sariputta and Ananda—were intimidated to debate with him.
One day, Vimalakirti feigned illness. Thousands of people, including great Bodhisattvas (enlightened beings) led by Manjushri (the Bodhisattva of Wisdom), came to visit his sickbed.
A grand philosophical debate began in his small room, which miraculously expanded to hold millions of beings. The topic was the highest teaching of Mahayana Buddhism: the Dharma-door of Non-duality (the realization that all opposites—good and evil, self and other, samsara and nirvana—are ultimately illusions).
Thirty-two magnificent Bodhisattvas stepped forward, one by one, using brilliant logic and beautiful poetry to explain how to transcend dualistic thinking.
Finally, Manjushri spoke, offering a breathtakingly perfect intellectual explanation of Non-duality. He then turned to Vimalakirti and asked, 'We have all spoken. Now, lay disciple, what is your teaching on the entrance into Non-duality?'
Vimalakirti remained completely silent. He did not say a single word. Manjushri smiled and applauded, saying, 'Excellent! Excellent! Until there are no words, no syllables, and no concepts, how can one truly enter Non-duality? Your silence is the true thunder!' Vimalakirti demonstrated that absolute truth cannot be spoken; it can only be experienced.
