The Cat as Judge

A partridge returned to his old nest and found a hare living there. They argued over ownership and decided to ask someone wise to judge.

They saw an old cat sitting like a saint by the river. The cat spoke of non-violence and justice, saying, "Come closer; my ears are weak."

Trusting his gentle words, both came near. The cat seized them. The dispute ended not through justice but through choosing a judge without character.
