Wisdom Tale
A Brahmin family kept a young mongoose in their home. The mongoose grew up with their baby and loved the child deeply. The mother trusted him, but a small doubt remained in her heart because he was still a wild creature.
One day she left the baby sleeping and went to fetch water. While she was gone, a snake entered the house and moved toward the cradle. The mongoose attacked the snake and killed it after a fierce struggle.
When the mother returned, the mongoose ran to greet her with blood on his mouth. Without entering the room or checking the child, she cried, "You have killed my baby!" In blind fear, she struck him down.
Then she rushed inside and found her child safe, sleeping peacefully. Beside the cradle lay the dead snake. The mongoose had protected the baby with his life.
The mother wept bitterly, but regret could not undo the act done in haste.
