The Donkey in a Lion's Skin

One day, while hunting near Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his Sikhs came across a donkey grazing alone. The Guru instructed his Sikhs to capture a wild lion, skin it, and drape the lion's skin over the donkey.

They set the disguised donkey loose near the village. When the villagers saw what they thought was a ferocious lion roaming freely, panic spread. People locked their doors, stopped going to their fields, and lived in terror for days. The "lion" ate freely from the fields, as no one dared to stop it.

Eventually, the donkey wandered near a herd of other donkeys. Hearing them braying, its natural instincts took over, and it began to bray loudly as well. The illusion was instantly shattered. The terrified villagers realized it was just a donkey, grabbed their sticks, and chased it away, beating it severely.

When the Sikhs saw this, they laughed. But Guru Gobind Singh Ji gathered them and delivered a profound lesson.

He said, "O Khalsa, I have given you the distinct identity (Bana) of a lion. You wear the weapons and look like a saint-soldier. But if your inside is filled with the cowardice, greed, or ignorance of a donkey, your outward appearance will not save you. When you open your mouth or face a test, your true nature will be revealed."

He taught that the Khalsa must not just look brave, but must cultivate inner purity, truth, and courage to truly represent the Guru.
