In Gurbani, the central spiritual obstacle is identified as Haumai, a compound term derived from 'Hau' (I) and 'Mai' (mine). Haumai is the false belief that I am an independent, self-contained center of the universe, locked in competition against all other beings. It is the generative root of fear, anxiety, arrogance, and loneliness.
Psychology recognizes that chronic self-referential thought is strongly correlated with depression and anxiety. When our attention is entirely contracted around the self, even minor inconveniences feel existential. Seva performs a radical surgical extraction: it redirects the beam of consciousness outward in generous, loving attention.
Importantly, seva is not condescending charity. In charity, the giver remains elevated above the recipient. In seva, the server recognizes the Divine light residing equally within the person being served. The server feels profound gratitude toward the recipient for granting the opportunity to serve.
